“The Truth About Uneven Lies”
A Four Part Series

PART 1

Side Hill Lie/Ball Above the Feet

When faced with a side hill lie, ball above the feet (Picture 1) all that is necessary to create a good golf shot is to:

1. Choose a golf club longer than you would use off a flat lie and
2. Open the face of the golf club

It’s the opening of the face of the golf club (Picture 2) that counters both the slope and the swing path.  Don’t make the mistake of aligning away from the target.  And, that’s the truth!

PART 2

Side Hill Lie/Ball Below the Feet

The truth when faced with a situation of having a shot with the ball below your feet yet on a side hill lie (Picture 1) is to:

1. Align yourself to the target with clubface in a slightly closed position (Picture 2) and
2. To chose a golf club that is shorter than the one you would use off a level lie

Don’t make the mistake of aligning away from the intended target line.

PART 3

Up Hill Lie

When thinking of how to successfully handle this shot, your key thoughts are to:

1. Align the body to the slope of the land (Picture 1) and
2. Choose a club longer than the one you would use if the lie were flat

And, finally keep the weight on the lower leg throughout the swing. (Picture 2)  In this situation you will always experience a slight draw or pull shot; so allow for it.

PART 4

Down Hill Lie

This lie is the trickiest of all uneven lies.  So let’s keep it simple.  You would first:

1. Align the body to the slope of the land (Picture 1) and
2. Choose a club shorter than the one you would use off a level lie and make sure your weight stays on the lower leg throughout both the backswing and follow through (Picture 2).

Now this concludes our four part series; so to summarize:

1. A side hill lie/ball above your feet and the up hill lie requires a club longer than off a flat lie
2. A side hill lie/ball below your feet and the down hill lie requires a club shorter than off a flat lie
